“No emotion. No weakness. No retreat.”

Katt Powers

Overview:

City of Whispers by Katt Powers has been waiting ever so patiently on my Kindle for me; I can’t believe it took me this long to read this epic fantasy! Flawlessly merging the fantastical and mechanical, City of Whispers centres around a battered heroine named Dhani Karim, the Empire’s former assassin…

In this steampunk fantasy, Dhani’s been framed for murder and exiled to a remote city in the desert as punishment. To add insult to injury, she’s now paired up with a spy who’ll report her every move to the Empire. When a cult begins a war, it is up to Dhani to unravel the mysteries surrounding the bloodthirsty group. Can Dhani and Parvan work together for the greater good? Is there anyone she can trust in this godforsaken place? Every choice Dhani makes could have a lasting and terrible consequence…

City of Whispers is a whole new world of epic steampunk fantasy goodness.
It kept me hooked to the very last page!

Happiness Boost:

Dhani is both sassy and cynical, and her perspective makes for a fun read even though she’s surrounded by danger. Together with her sarcasm, Dhani’s heart of gold made me love her even more. But truthfully all of Katt’s characters are complex individuals, making it so easy to adore them! I had so many questions (particularly about Parvan), and it was really exciting to have the puzzle slowly pieced together as the tale went on.

City of Whispers features quite a lot of cloak and dagger mystery, so it’s hard for Dhani (and the reader) to differentiate between friend and foe. This is definitely a good thing! I don’t always want to know until the pivotal moment, when the revelation will have the biggest impact. Katt opened up the fantasy with a big action scene, and then retraced the steps leading up to this crucial event. It’s been a while since I read a story that does this and it was like a breath of fresh air!

The world is completely different to anything I’ve come across in my previous fantasy reads, and it’s always a great thing when there’s something new! The political and religious aspects are well and truly ingrained into this epic fantasy, grounding us in a world of big ideas and severe consequences. It makes City of Whispers an incredibly absorbing read!

Downside:

None for me! This steampunk fantasy is an amalgamation of everything you could love about both settings.

Final Thoughts:

City of Whispers by Katt Powers is an epic steampunk fantasy, full of deadly pitfalls which could see the end of the Empire’s former assassin. And once I started reading it, I didn’t want to stop! Who wants to be an adult with chores to do, when you can immerse yourself in a world of deceit and murder?! I have loved every minute of this witty, brilliant story and cannot wait to dive into the next book.
