Overview:
A huge thank you goes to Cambria Williams, for letting me read an e-ARC of Keeper of the Word! This is book two in the dark fantasy duology, The Unsung and the Wolf, and you can see my review for book one (The Befallen) here. But without any further ado, let’s talk about this incredible sequel!
Sir Tolvar is desperate for peace, for a moment where he can breathe without aching for what he’s lost. But when he is sent on an errand to find the StarSeer Elanna, it’s clear that the world doesn’t care if he’s grieving. Instead, the Wolf must track down this woman who can see the future, even as darkness continues to encroach on the Capella Realm. When Elanna is found, it’s just the beginning of the next journey Sir Tolvar must undertake. To save the realm from the doom that approaches, Sir Tolvar must let go of his thirst for vengeance. But will he be able to protect Elanna when his heart and mind is hurting? Can he even trust that the StarSeer’s predicted future is approaching? Wouldn’t it be easier to just give up and declare all hope lost?
Happiness Boost:
Within Keeper of the Word, we witness the weight of grief. It’s more than an elephant, it’s the whole weight of the solar system on Sir Tolvar’s chest. Cambria merges brutal honesty with a deft touch of empathy throughout this dark fantasy, and I’m in love with how the darkness doesn’t pierce through to the very essence of our knight. He’s battered, bruised beyond compare. But this character clutches at honour and duty like no one else. It’s been so captivating to read how he navigates loss, even as he must face another threat to the realm. Sir Tolvar is a classic fantasy MMC, a broken hero with a redemption arc. I love that *so* much.
This fantasy asks the question: how far would you go to save those you love? What would you sacrifice, to give them hope? Destined to never leave the side of her sisters, constantly reminded that StarSeers are meant to observe rather than act… Elanna must tear up the rulebook in order to save everyone. She can hear the cracks as doom draws ever nearer, and if Elanna doesn’t go beyond what’s allowed? The realm will fall. Darkness will swallow everything in its wake. I love how Cambria gives us an FMC who is sure in herself, even as she forges a new path. Yes to that!!
Keeper of the Word is definitely a story you’ll want to read if you love a ragtag crew and found family. And if you love epic quests, well… They don’t get bigger than saving the world, right?! This story had so many twists and turns that I didn’t see coming, and it’s been a riveting adventure from start to finish. What a finale Cambria gave us! I’m saying no more than that though, because nobody wants spoilers…
Downside:
I enjoyed this tale immensely, there’s no downside for me!
Final Thoughts:
Keeper of the Word by Cambria Williams is a dark fantasy of epic quests, grieving hearts and the desperate desire to save the realm. If you want a classic fantasy which will keep you turning pages until the very last? This is for you! I’m quite sad that the tale is over now, but so glad that we got such an incredible finale.
