“Something’s not right in the woods.”

Ephie & Celia Risho

Overview:

A huge thank you goes to Ephie and Celia Risho for reaching out to me about Phoenix Rising, book one in their YA fantasy series, The Elementalists! This gorgeous book has been such an adventure, filled with mischievous magic and a kingdom in danger. How could anyone pass up an opportunity to dive into such a tale?! Let’s give you an overview…

Even though Amber is only twelve, when a creature sets her community ablaze she’s determined to track down the mastermind behind it. The pixies in the forest urge her on, and Amber races to find answers even as the realm begins to darken. Can Amber and the friends she makes along the way fight the great evil seeping across the land? Why has she been chosen as the spokesperson for the forest? Is it even possible for a group of young teenagers to save the kingdom before it all burns?

Whimsical, magical, delightful… You can’t ask for more than that!

Happiness Boost:

Phoenix Rising has been a journey back into the very best of the YA fantasy genre for me. I try not to do comparisons very often, but if you’ve loved Brandon Mull’s Fablehaven series, Kate Forsyth’s Chronicles of Estelliana series, or the Inkworld trilogy by Cornelia Funke? You are going to fall in love with this first instalment in The Elementalists! There’s just a wholesome whimsy about it, with a vibrant colour and heart emanating from every page.

I *need* to fangirl about the artwork within Phoenix Rising, because it is gorgeous! This was just like the icing on an already delicious cake. I miss getting artwork in a tale, and what we’re given in this fantasy? It just proves to me why we should have more! It adds to the spectacle, to the *feel* and heart of the Amber’s journey. I’m over the moon with how the illustrations beautifully intertwine with this adventure.

The evil magical creatures are ferocious, just as the pixies are delightfully capricious. Ephie and Celia know how to draw a reader into a story, and I have no doubt the rest of the series is just as wonderful as this first instalment! It may sound odd, but it’s like a glass of fizzy lemonade: once you take a sip, you experience all of the joyous fun. How could this not be a happiness boost?!

Downside:

I don’t have a downside, this YA fantasy has been a delight to read!
