I know, I know… Quicksilver by the wonderful Callie Hart has been out in the world for a while now. Have you ever grabbed a romantasy, knowing full well you’ll love it, but then got side-tracked by other books? Because that was my experience with this story. But this all changed late last year, when I had a buddy read adventure with Mel and Liz! Seriously friends, thank you. Our buddy read was a highlight of 2025 for me. Now without further ado, let’s dive into an overview…
Desperate to survive, Saeris Fane will do anything to ensure she and her brother get through another day. But stealing has dire consequences, and Queen Madra is unforgiving. But then Saeris does the unthinkable… She turns a weapon against a captain, and unleashes a legend. Whisked away to the fae realm, Saeris is determined to get back to her brother. But to do this, a deal must be struck—and everyone knows, it’s not a good idea to make a bargain with the fae. Can Saeris and Kingfisher find a way to work together? Why has Saeris’ alchemist magic painted a target on her back? And as war threatens to devour everything in its path, can Saeris survive the ancient conflict she’s been unwillingly drawn into?
Happiness Boost:
Quicksilver is a romantasy which really shouldn’t have been on my TBR this long. And it may be odd to start my happiness boosts with this one, but… The humour in this tale? Why did no one tell me I was in for such a treat?! And we all know I’m a sucker for animal companions in a story, so the fact that we get the cute-as-a-button Onyx? This adventure has had it all. It’s not often that I literally laugh out loud, but the first encounter between Saeris, Kingfisher and Onyx was too good to resist. Honestly, when an author can write humour like this so well? Their stories deserve a place on the overflowing bookshelf! And yes, that means having three different editions, because I have no shelf control.
Within Quicksilver, Callie tightens the tension between Saeris and Kingfisher so masterfully, you want to forget your promise to stop at certain chapters during the buddy read. But, more than that, this romantasy explores how broken people can still do the right thing. Even when it’s hard, even when it is likely doomed. Doing the right thing is more important than ever when those in power would have you believe otherwise. Does Kingfisher get praise for this, outside of his circle? No. Does he get compassion? Again, no. But this broody fae persists. And yes, I adore this.
Quicksilver gives a consciousness to metal, and the interplay between Saeris and the quicksilver is honestly eerie. It has no allegiance, and is deadly chaos in liquid form. Am I wrong in thinking this to be more disturbing than the one ring in The Lord of the Rings? The one ring ensnared its wearer, corrupting the hearts of so many. But it never spoke. It never made bargains. And that’s just another reason to love this romantasy—for bringing something so devious to the table.
Downside:
This was such a fun read, I have no downside!
Final Thoughts:
Quicksilver by Callie Hart is (as you likely already know), a phenomenal romantasy, featuring an intense love story amidst a growing darkness. I have Brimstone waiting for me on my Kindle as we speak, and solemnly vow I won’t let it sit there on unread for over a year. I may not be able to say the same for the rest of the books on my TBR, but for this one? Let’s do this, am I right?!
