A huge thank you goes to Amelia MacLeod, for letting me read an e-ARC of Shadow’s Price! This romantasy is the third instalment in The Poisoned Kingdoms, but focuses on a new couple (which is why it’s also known as book one in The Miragelands Duet). And oh goodness if this fantasy isn’t something special… But before I fangirl too much, let’s give you an overview!
Katrina sacrificed herself two years ago, to right the wrongs she unleashed upon the Vales. Sealing herself within the Miragelands, Katrina has managed to survive thanks to her cunning and gritty determination. Knowing she will likely never see anyone from the Vales again, everything changes for Katrina when the Ruthless King manages to find his way through the barrier… But is it for the better? Because Evren Avery hasn’t come to bring her home—instead, he needs her help to save the magic which is failing across both realms. Happiness Boost:
Shadow’s Price is such a captivating adventure, and I love how Amelia positions us with Katrina as the FMC! Because, if you’ve read the previous books in this series, you’ll know our heroine isn’t just a morally grey character… She has been a walking red flag. This romantasy is about redemption, but you know what else it is? It’s a reclamation of power and agency. Having previously been under the grip of other people’s whims, I’m in awe of Katrina’s fight back and her desire to right past wrongs.
The beautifully quirky and chaotic found family within these pages is such a highlight, and I love how they’re all on equal footing—even with the Ruthless King. And for someone who is known to be heartless? Can I just say how much I love Evren Avery?! He refuses to let Katrina sit in the darkness, unless *she* wants to. He pushes her to embrace everything that she is, and that includes the magic she wants to ignore. This isn’t to say our King is a cinnamon roll book boyfriend, as he’s so much more complicated than that. But I adore Evren, and I adore him so much for Katrina.
When you read a book by Amelia, you are guaranteed to fall in love with an animal companion. And Shadow’s Price is no exception! And when you add in the terrifying wraiths and backstabbing mages residing within the Miragelands? Oh glitterbugs, you’re in for such a treat when you dive into this. I won’t say more, because spoilers, but I promise this *is* a fantastic read!
Downside:
No downside for me, I’ve loved this instalment so much!
Final Thoughts:
Shadow’s Price by Amelia MacLeod is a romantasy full of villains, broken promises, and a seemingly impossible quest.
