Ember Holt
Overview:
Who’s been a lucky bookworm and got to read an e-ARC of The Chimera Bounty by Ember Holt? This one! And a *huge* thank you has to go to Book Sirens and the author for letting me read this thrilling NA urban fantasy. This shifter tale is not only full of a lot of new ideas, it also features incredibly captivating characters. Who could turn away from that?!
Maeve is a student investigative journalist, working at a restaurant as she does the daily grind for her dream. But when Corvin appears at the bar, her life will never be the same again. Corvin is on the search for a doctor, the one shifter who can cure his illness. With a Naga crime lord at his heels, Corvin can’t trust his magic, considering what Maeve calls his ‘fraebies’ (fae rabies). Can Maeve help track down this doctor, to get the answers Corvin needs? What magic does Maeve herself possess? And is there more to this pull between Maeve and Corvin than he’d like to admit? Maeve is determined to find out…

Happiness Boost:
Ember has completely reshaped my idea of shifters, because this is no cookie cutter tale of wolves, lions or bears. What do we get instead? Chimeras. Seriously, yes, we get *chimeras*. I had the biggest thrill running down my spine reading about them, not to mention the Naga crime lord! And with these shifters set in an urban setting on earth, the story felt like it was turbocharged with goodness.
There are some characters whom we’ll protect to the very end, because they’re both fierce and ridiculously adorable at the same time. Who am I talking about? Corvin. He’s so determined to find a cure, and to right the many wrongs of the fae realm. And yet the poor guy was flummoxed by a burrito Maeve hands him, and I swear he lives to confuse Bechet. When you read The Chimera Bounty, you’ll find a specific moment between these two males which left me chuckling for a *long* time. Ember really knows how to write engaging characters and it is fantastic!
There’s a touch of video game goodness about this NA fantasy, with stats which can be brought up on a kind of holographic screen before someone. At first it tripped me up, because I weirdly equate this more with the sci-fi genre… But why not here, too? It was pretty fun being along for the ride, as Maeve unlocks more abilities and learns about her heritage! By the end, I was probably more excited by her stats than she was!
Downside:
Personally I really, *really* enjoyed myself with The Chimera Bounty. I didn’t have a downside, except that the book ended!
