“I’m not sure what’s harder: changing yourself or changing the world…”

Jean Swan

Overview:

A massive thank you goes to Jean Swan for letting me read an e-ARC of The Dreamer, the prequel novella to her upcoming epic fantasy series! At just 182 pages, this novella is like a breath of fresh air with Theren’s coming of age story, but let me give you a quick overview:

Among the Alvar, everyone knows what happened to the Mad Dreamer. And they’ve vowed not to repeat their past mistakes. Now, children who show an affinity for this talent of memories and premonition are taken from their families and trained in solitude for years. Thankfully, Theren and his best friend Valyn have never had to fear this fate; Theren’s even planning on becoming a Hunter before he goes on his first Brotherwalk. But what happens when fate overthrows his future? What is this pull that he can feel from the edge of the forest? And will his friendship with Valyn survive the changes ahead?

This sweet and epic fantasy is just the beginning of something truly incredible…

Happiness Boost:

The Dreamer gives us such an epic fantasy, featuring a powerful magic which can break the mind of anyone who doesn’t heed the warnings of the Mad Dreamer. We get vibes of Ferngully (a movie I completely love), Ursula K. Le Guin, even A. G. Slatter within this beautiful novella! How could I not give praise for such an incredible atmosphere?!

This novella also highlights just how hard it can be for someone to fit in, regardless of their privileged position. Because even though his mother is the Speaker of the spire, Theren can only find comfort and true understanding with Valyn, who hides secrets of her own. I am a sucker for found family and Jean gives us such a solid foundation with these friends. I love seeing how their support for each other shines through even the darkest of times!

Downside:

I have no downside, I’m just sad that we need to wait for the first novel in this series!

Final Thoughts:

The Dreamer by indie author Jean Swan is an epic YA fantasy novella, featuring a unique and powerful legend of magic. I don’t want to give any more away, because this novella needs to be read by everybody who loves a coming of age tale! So if you love the sound of this beautiful story from my review?
