I’m so grateful to Maham Fatemi for letting me read an ARC of the YA fantasy romance, The Frost Soldier and the Gilded Duty! This is the glorious second instalment in The Heartless and the Wicked series, following on from The Ruins of the Heartless Fae… And I cannot wait to tell you how amazing this story is! But first, let’s give you an overview, shall we?
Kolfinna has been working so hard to be a Royal Guard, ever since she came back from the Eventyrslot ruins. But with the other guards craving her downfall, Kolfinna knows she has to work doubly hard to save herself from a terrible ending. And with the Hunter’s Association petitioning to be part of the military once more, Kolfinna has to prove her worth as a fae or risk death at their hands. As ancient monsters come through the border, is this Kolfinna’s chance to show the King that she deserves protection? Will the enigmatic Blár once again be the key to her salvation? And what happens when a terrible secret is unleashed at the border?
Happiness Boost:
Obviously, The Frost Soldier and the Gilded Duty had a *lot* to live up to, after I raved about its predecessor! But I’m overjoyed to tell you that Maham’s writing has completely exceeded my expectations in terms of unique creatures, deadly adventures and the simmering slow burn between Kolfinna and Blár. This is a beautifully crafted YA fantasy romance, with just enough angst to make life interesting!
I know I’ve already touched on the relationship between our main characters, but I have to expand on this as a separate happiness boost! Blár, my fussy cat of a hero, has retained his icy exterior with those about him. But when Kolfinna is around? This powerful male is such a sweetie. And can we talk about how impressive Blár’s magic is, when it’s unleashed because Kolfinna’s in danger? I had thrills running along my spine! The world needs heroes like this man. And if anyone disagrees on this, I’m going to have set you straight!
We all love a good prophecy, right? Because let me tell you, The Frost Soldier and the Gilded Duty has an epic one just waiting for you! Maham has threaded a chilling prediction throughout this YA fantasy, and I was scared to even breathe… So of course it’s a happiness boost! There’s more danger, more betrayal, more EVERYTHING in this tale. I *badly* want to read the third book, even though this beautiful instalment only came out today!
Downside:
I want more! But honestly, there’s no downside to The Frost Soldier and the Gilded Duty!
