Have you read The Queen’s Blade by Evelyn Ward yet?! I know I should be playing it cool and not highlighting just how excited I am with the very first sentence of my review, but… This dark romantic fantasy is amazing! Seriously, if you don’t believe me by the time I’m done here? I’m clearly saying it wrong! Now without further ado, let’s give you an overview of this beauty!
In the Eternal City, a Witch with mastery over the four elements sits on the throne as Queen. Presiding over the different Factions who call this place home, she is the reason that the Witches in the realm are granted the best of everything. The rest? They scrabble for what’s left. Upholding the Witch Queen’s laws and protecting her with their lives, the four assassins known as the Queen’s Blades have been feared for an age. But when one of the four sisters is murdered, is it a sign that something catastrophic is about to be unleashed upon the Eternal City? And how can Fey, the Blade with the unusual power of deadly water magic, unravel the mystery surrounding her sister’s death? Will she survive the darkness stirring at the heart of the realm?
Happiness Boost:
The Queen’s Blade is a dark romantasy full of so many jaw dropping moments! And did I screech when things unravelled?! Oh glitterbugs, of course I did! How could I not, when the writing is this good?! I love a murder mystery… And as that’s at the very heart of this story, I knew it was going to be wonderful. But add to that the beautiful tropes such as enemies to lovers, found family and feminine rage? Oh. My. Goodness. This deserves *so* much praise!
I love how Evelyn crafts such a detailed world, one loaded with power plays, deadly secrets and a bloodthirsty cast of characters. And even better? At no point did I guess what was coming next! I adore how chaos reigns in the Eternal City, with Fey at the centre of the maelstrom. This Blade would (and does) go to the ends of the earth for answers. I’m telling you, she’ll tear the realm apart before she gives up on finding answers.
This dark romantic fantasy is such a brilliant tale of redemption, but it’s also about what it means to be true to yourself. And when you get characters like Fey and Alastair, who look into the darkness and don’t flinch from it? Holy. Guacamole. This is such an epic story, and yet we’re only in book one?! Anything you write, Evelyn… I’m going to buy it. Love it. Worship it. It’s just a fact.
Downside:
There’s no downside for me, I love this fantasy! And even better? Book two (The Blood Witch) will be out in October!
