“Behold, the storm gathers. And on its winds calamity comes.”

J. V. Hilliard

Overview:

When I dived into The Trillias Gambit by J. V. Hilliard, I thought I had a fair idea about what to expect. I’ve absolutely loved the previous books in The Warminster Series, but oh my goodness does this third instalment completely exceed my expectations! So let’s give you an overview before I share my excitement…

Keeper Daemus and his companions have journeyed to the Devil’s Horn, determined to recover the lost Tome of Enlightenment. But when the god Trillias sets them inside the Labyrinth he’s spent an age designing, Daemus knows their success rests on a knife’s edge. Elsewhere, Addilyn and Ritter are still scrambling to get ready for the war that is coming; is it even possible to survive the devastation that awaits them? Will they finally outwit the Bone elf assassin who has been haunting their steps? And can anyone stop the fallen Keeper, Graytorris the Mad?

Happiness Boost:

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, if you’ve ever wanted to read a truly epic fantasy? This series is for you! The Trillias Gambit cements Hilliard as one of my favourite epic fantasy authors, and I don’t say that lightly. The detail in the plot and character development is extraordinary, and Hilliard has elevated the stakes like never before. Honestly if you’ve enjoyed stories by David & Leigh Eddings, Patrick Rothfuss, Raymond E. Feist or R. A. Salvatore? Add this to your TBR right now!

The Trillias Gambit does more than just deliver an epic overarching story. Within these pages, the forbidden love between Ritter and Addilyn blooms, just as Daemus’ struggle with self-worth and duty is treated with a delicate touch. Words become magic in Hilliard’s books, and this third tale in The Warminster Series is no exception. I love that there are multiple stories within this fantasy, and every character is given a chance to shine!

Within this epic fantasy, we are treated to a magic I don’t think I’ve ever come across before. I won’t spoil the surprise, but suffice to say Hilliard’s imagination knows no bounds. And I couldn’t be happier about that! Every single book in this series just keeps giving me more than I thought possible. More adventures, more dangers and yes, I am *already* aching to read the next tale!

Downside:

I have absolutely no downside for The Trillias Gambit!

Final Thoughts:

The Trillias Gambit by J. V. Hilliard is an epic fantasy full of war, forbidden love and the whims of a god. I’ve loved every single second of my time back in The Warminster Series and am just really hoping we aren’t far away from the next instalment, because I’m aching to know what happens next!
