And to be fair, I read this glorious book last month… But it’s been such a struggle to sum up just how much this story has meant to me, I couldn’t do it justice then. Even now, I don’t know what I’m going to say! Shall we find out together? Let’s give you an overview!
When Mia and her sister Kali are finally to be apprenticed, Mia’s dream of learning from an incredible artist is soon denied. It seems nobody wants to teach her, least of all her idol. Unable to deal with this loss, Mia spirals out of control until her sister Kali helps her refocus. But when Kali is murdered? The darkness in Mia’s life is overwhelming, and secrets are about to spill. Teaming up with a moody vampyre, Mia and Idris must track down Kali’s murderer as soon as possible, as more women are killed with each new night. Can Mia and Idris find a way to save the city from this terror? What secret about Mia’s forgotten past is about to come to light? Can she even function with this heaviness of grief overshadowing her life?
Happiness Boost:
First up glitterbugs, I *did* cry in These Shadows Become Her. And not just tears for a few chapters, it was actually a sob fest for almost the entire span of the romantasy. Demi has such a way with words, with grief and the insidious darkness that can live inside us, that I couldn’t look away. It’s been a long time since I blocked out the world to purely focus on reading a story, but this one? This one demanded it. Mia is such a relatable character and my heart smashed to smithereens for her. I don’t want to give away spoilers (even my overview only tells you what was already in the blurb), but suffice to say… This dark fantasy grips you, commanding you to dance with grief and all that it entails.
Can we talk about how These Shadows Become Her gives us one of the most intriguing vampyres I’ve ever come across? Idris is an enigma, and there’s so much more to him than Mia (and the reader) knows. He is a broken hero, a tortured soul. And I swear the only thing holding him together right now is a vow made in the direst of times. Demi, please take a bow. The characters in this fantasy are living, breathing entities and I’ve fallen for all of them. Minus he who shall not be named, because he deserved everything coming to him. Just saying.
At the heart of this dark fantasy, is a murder mystery. And goodness don’t I love those! As someone who thrives on this genre, I thought I’d have a pretty good handle on what to expect. But once again… My expectations were completely blown out of the water! There are twists in this tale you will *never* see coming. Of course that’s a happiness boost! Brace yourselves, glitterbugs. You’re in for an incredible journey.
Downside:
Clearly, I cried a tonne. But that’s certainly not a downside for me!

These Shadows Become Her by Demi Clorissa is a dark romantasy full of broken souls, terrible secrets and a sliver of hope amongst grief. I’m well and truly in love with Mia’s tale, and Demi’s writing is pure magic. I promise you, you want this beautiful book in your life. More than that, you *need* it.
