“I’m in the presence of danger.”

Tessonja Odette

I’m just putting it out there: let’s not talk about how long To Carve a Fae Heart by Tessonja Odette has been sitting on my TBR. Okay? Okay. This romantasy is an utterly mesmerising adventure into the faelands, and is positively brimming with danger, magic and betrayal. Have I intrigued you? Of course I have! So let’s give you an overview, glitterbugs!

Evie has never wanted to marry a king, least of all a fae one. But at the Hundred Year Reaping, the treaty demands two human women must enter the faelands and marry two royal brothers. And when the first two women who’d been chosen are executed? Evie and her sister are next in line. Desperate to find some common ground with the younger brother, everything changes for Evie when her sister flees and leaves her alone to face the music. The fae king must marry, and now it’s Evie who will become his wife. Can she survive marrying someone who can become a beast? Is her sacrifice going to be enough to save everyone from a devastating war? Will Evie’s heart even survive what’s ahead?

Am I going to be reading everything Tessonja writes after reading this? Yes, yes I am…

Happiness Boost:

Evie, you glorious heroine. This young lady is such a snarky and indomitable character, I was cheering for her every step of the way. I badly want to say I’d be as brave as she is in the face of the unknown… But let’s be honest, glitterbugs. I’d wilt like a dying flower. And that’s not to say Evie is heartless; far from it! Her loyalty to her family is second to none, and it’s ridiculously daunting to witness how far she has to go for the ones she loves. Of course that’s a happiness boost!

Can we talk about heroes who are more than two dimensional? I’ve been on a winning streak with these in my recent reads, but Aspen… This fae king is such a puzzle and as an old lady at heart I’m not ashamed to admit I love that! We’re told of his fickle ways, his back and forth between the seelie and unseelie factions. And again and again, we’re reminded that this fae doesn’t have a heart. But au contraire, dear glitterbugs. This broody hero feels so much, it’s a wonder he hasn’t shattered before now.

Within To Carve a Fae Heart we get intrigue, treachery and the ultimate betrayal. There’s actually so much heartache I don’t think Evie even needs to think about carving out hearts. Everyone we love in this story is actually already so broken (although they try to hide it), so why bother? This romantasy is all about redemption and exhibiting a fierce defiance against overwhelming odds. And by the way, that old adage of not judging a book by its cover? Well let’s just say it’s very apt for their journey too. So have I got book two ready to go on my Kindle now? YES.

I’ve really enjoyed this gorgeous romantasy, so there’s no downside for me!
