It’s been sitting on my TBR for much too long, but I finally immersed myself in Until the Stars Fall by Vanessa Rasanen this month! This NA fantasy romance is book one in a series of interconnected standalones (Immortal Reveries), which is already a huge plus in my eyes. Why? Well this way, if my memory fails me on the finer points, it doesn’t matter! Because with each new book, we’ll be following a different character’s journey. Clearly it’s a win-win, right?! But first, let’s give you an overview for this beauty!
As a human, Lieke’s safety is largely due to her position as a servant of the royal fae family. Having grown up beside one of the princes, things become awkward when Lieke admits she’s fallen in love with him… Because he’s promised to someone else, and the last time a human wed a royal fae? A terrible war was unleashed, and even now the scars haven’t faded. But when Lieke kills a fae noble and is sentenced to death, she thought the prince would stand up for her. Say something, anything, to his father. But he doesn’t. Instead, his older brother steps in and declares they’re engaged in order to save her life. Can Lieke find a way out of this messy situation? Why is this betrothal causing waves amongst both races? And would it really be so terrible, to fall for Prince Connor?
Happiness Boost:
Until the Stars Fall is a beautiful fantasy romance about the impossibility of love in a divided realm, and the defiant hope that refuses to perish. Lieke’s honesty and ability to share what she’s feeling is such a strength within this fantasy! I also love that Lieke and Connor work towards understanding each other; nothing is taken for granted here. Yes, some of that is due to the fact that they need to pull off this fake engagement. But mostly? They’re just two empathetic souls who have somehow found each other when everything seems dark. I adore their willingness to explore what’s simmering between them.
I’ll be the first to admit, when we’re talking about lessons a mother has taught us, I choke up. So when there’s a moment of Lieke recalling her mother telling her it’s good to feel things? But to not let it consume her? Oh Vanessa. The power you wield with your words is such a force. Tears were streaming down my face but I couldn’t even be mad about it. It’s like being given a hug from beyond the grave and I’m so grateful for this moment in Until the Stars Fall.
You can probably tell by now that this is very much a character-driven story for me. But honestly that’s what makes this fantasy romance so impossible to resist! These characters are complex, and yes I’m including Prince Brennan and King Nevan in this. Are there moments where you wish things were different, that other paths were taken? Of course! I was particularly aching for things to improve between the king and his sons. But who wants a straight road amongst this magic?! Not me, that’s for sure! It just wouldn’t be as impactful otherwise.
Downside:
I love how Lieke’s heart is worn on her sleeve, making no apology for being open and honest. There’s no downside for me!
Final Thoughts:
Until the Stars Fall by Vanessa Rasanen is a magical fantasy romance full of heartache, dire choices and an epic love. I’m incredibly excited to see what comes next in the Immortal Reveries series, because I have no doubt it’s going to be just as wonderful as this tale!
